Irmeli worships the memory of her deceased composer father, but falls in love with her mother Ruuti's new fiancé, Dr. Hallamaa. Unhappy love depresses Irmeli, and she tries to run away to Sweden. Antti, an engineering student who lives as a tenant in the family's home, sets off after Irmeli to bring her back home.

The ship's crew gets tired of their sophisticated coffee maker and replaces her with Roma girl Veera, who has escaped from an arranged marriage. Eager young radio reporter Teräsvuori stages a one-man burglary into the Helsinki Art Museum, recorded on tape for a later broadcast by his friend Laakso. Teräsvuori gets caught but escapes from police custody to start his private investigations together with female radio colleague Eila.

The S/S Vellamo heads to Alexandria with Kaarina, the daughter of the ship's owner Hallerman, on board. As Kaarina trades places with the family's housekeeper Marja, first mate Yrjö takes a liking to Marja whom he believes to be miss Hallerman. Meanwhile Kaarina, pretending to be a member of the cleaning staff, starts getting close with lower ranking officer Kalle Aaltonen.

Merchant Ville arrives in Malaga with his secretary Esa to meet Outsider regarding a valuable inheritance. Esa falls in love with Spanish beauty Carmen, who joins the pair on their trip to Morocco. Carmen's husband Juan also follows the group.

Jalmari, who does odd jobs at the harbor, rescues little Risto from being beaten up by older boys. The child is afraid of his violent foster parents and runs away to kind-hearted Jalmari. His foster mother Miina reports the escape to the Salvation Army, whose lieutenant Sirkka finds the boy in Jalmari's shabby cottage. Risto runs away again when they try to return him to his foster parents.

University student Jaakko and master's degree holder Aarne arrive in a rural village, where they become involved in organizing a charity event and the relationship problems of farmhand Kaapro and maid Senni.

Concertmaster Orasto and his pianist wife Elna hire Maija, who has been treated harshly by life, as their domestic helper. Erkki, the composer son of a noisy family of musicians, falls in love with Maija, but difficulties pile up in the way of the young couple's happiness.

The press gets excited about a girl from a fish factory who accidentally wins the Girl of the Week beauty contest and writes an imaginative story about her as a millionaire heiress. Soon, the factory manager's son and socialites who want a share of her publicity are competing for her attention.

Composer and program director Harri forms a quartet, recruiting Apon, Teika, Kauko, and Olli as members. Based on an idea from Olli's beloved Raija, the ensemble is named the Kipparikvartetti.

Captain Kaarnoja finds himself caught up in intrigues and a dispute between the noblewoman Elisabeth and her cousin, Captain Gyllenskiöld. Kaarnoja comes into possession of a mysterious letter, which leads him and his loyal companion Sergeant Erkinpoika into battles, ambushes, and sword fights.

Poke and Pena, two private investigators in debt, see an advertisement in the newspaper about Dr. Peltonen's disappearance and the promised reward for finding him. The boys retreat to investigate the case in a house they have rented in the countryside, which happens to be next door to the criminal gang that kidnapped the doctor. The gang's boss, 'Synkkä' (Gloomy), and his sister, 'Kaunotar' (Beauty), try to distract the boys by hiring them to guard their villa.
