Fourteen-year-old Mara hires Max the detective to track down her missing mother. However, Max's son Sam and his friend Ortwin are very concerned because Max doesn't realize that Mara is a witch. Sam and Ortwin do everything they can to expose Mara.

At the opening of a butterfly exhibition, a mysterious woman approaches the rangers with a plea for help. A rare butterfly species in the rainforest is on the brink of extinction due to devastating wildfires. The rangers must locate the cocoons before they hatch, so the butterflies can be safely relocated. Once in South America, the mission turns out to be far more difficult than expected. The rangers leap from one adventure into the next: they have to prove themselves as tango dancers and football stars, brave wild rivers and towering mountains, and face off against bulls, crocodiles, piranhas, and venomous spiders.
