9.5

An ill-fated attempt to capture a wishing star as a gift for their parents leads Rolie and Zowie into a musical outer space venture that brings a pair of lost twins into their lives in the multicolored robotic family's second feature-length outing. The baby bots have inadvertently left their dwelling, a fantasy foster home more akin to amusement park than institution. When Rolie and Zowie bring the misplaced babies back to their home planet, Mom and Dad are willing to give up the Family Fun Day Parade in order to track down the "mothership." The intergalactic road trip results in the discovery that the infants need a good adoptive home. The parents offer verbal agreement (no red tape or exorbitant fees here!) and it's back home in time for the parade in this sweetly unjaded 68-minute movie from the folks at Disney Playhouse. Rolie Polie Olie, winner of the 2000 Emmy Award for outstanding special class animated program, presents a trio of episodes--one of which is perfect for Valentine's Day. In "Happy Hearts Day," Olie and Billy turn up their noses at Zowie's extensive preparations for "Gooey Hearts Day." When Mrs. Polie sets up a play date with the new neighbor girl, Polie Pi, the boys are initially begrudging. A quick bite by the "looove bug" soon has the boys competing with one another and showing off to impress Polie Pi, but this results in Polie Pi feeling sad and left out. "Top Dog Fish" finds Olie and Zowie enamored with the class fish they're caring for over the weekend and has pet dog Spot desperately begging for attention. In "Mom's Night Out," Mrs. Polie is off for a few sets of bowling while Pappy and the kids have a barbeque in the back yard. After promising not to leave a mess, the trio decides to make a 17-layer cake that leaves the kitchen in a shambles.
