Juliusz Słowacki’s drama “Balladyna” is one of the author’s most recognizable works. The television production was directed by Wojciech Adamczyk. The play, written in 1834, arose from a fascination with Slavic culture, and its plot was inspired by Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Macbeth.” In his interpretation, Wojciech Adamczyk eschews the ludic elements, giving the story a darker character. The conflict centers on the relationship between two strong female characters: Balladyna and Goplana. Filled with lust, crime, and blood, it’s a story that rivals the emotional depth and richness of Game of Thrones or The Witcher. The world Słowacki describes is dark and dense with passion. The exotic landscape of European pagan mythologies is combined with early Christian aesthetics. Viewers accustomed to “school-style” interpretations of the play will be surprised by the poignantly contemporary vision of human fate in an original approach.

A big shot prosecutor Teodor Szacki divorces his wife and leaves Warsaw to “start a new life” in picturesque town in south­east Poland ­ Sandomierz. After a short while he is called in to investigate a strange and mysterious murder case. Alienated in provincial reality he struggles to find a killer, when he stumbles upon more victims. While the investigation continues he realizes that all murders are connected to alleged historical Jewish ritual killings. Those murders prompt a wave of anti­Semitic hysteria in the town. In his investigation Szacki must wrestle with the painful tangle of Polish­Jewish relations and real findings of his work ­ that roots of some legends arefantasy, not a grain of truth…

Michal Szczesniak's staging combines the aesthetics of a psychological film and a comedy series. Moving the action of the drama to contemporary reality allows us to see a sad portrait of today's thirty- and forty-year-olds. She - an actress of the capital's theater and He - an acclaimed writer, decide to leave Poland. They emigrate to New York. The life of Jan Himilsbach (1931-1988) - stonemason, docker, sailor, actor, screenwriter and writer - is a collection of anecdotes on the one hand, and a string of overwhelming events on the other. As a juvenile shoemaker he was sent to a reformatory, as a railroad thief - to prison, and as a laborer - to a quarry in the God's Gift mine. The film uses interviews with Jan Himilsbach, excerpts from films featuring him, the song "Happiness, Where Are You," for which he wrote the lyrics, and autobiographical novellas set in Minsk Mazowiecki.
