Sasha Rumyantsev, a long-range driver, becomes an unwitting accomplice in a crime committed by the head of the motor depot where he works. The honest guy is accused of stealing a car of a hard-to-find product. The collective of the motor depot amicably stands up to protect their comrade and helps the investigator, Colonel Afanasyev, to find and expose the true criminals.

Sitting in the train compartment, Yegor recalls his childhood and his friendship with Nastenka, the most cheerful and mischievous girl in the village. Yegor left to study, while Nastenka grew into a charming young woman, dropped out of school, and began working at a resort. The vacationers predicted a brilliant career as an artist for her, and Nastya forgot her childhood friend. The guests from the capital who had promised to bring her to Moscow also forgot about her.

The end of August 1941. At night, a truck rushes along the last road not yet occupied by the enemy to Leningrad. In the back of two — civil aviation pilot Lunin and commissar of the air division Uvarov. Lunin, a man no longer young, experienced, but had not yet been in battle, was sent to the legendary squadron of fighter pilots under the command of Captain Rassokhin. The mayor of a village sees her son killed in a gun accident. A successful, dedicated bureuacrat, she must reconcile her desire to build a bridge - and the new housing that will come with it - with the reality of resistance from the townspeople and her own grief.
