A Red Army officer Polevoy possesses a navy dirk with a secret message encrypted in its handle. The second part of a message belongs to a White army officer Nikitskiy. It's up to three young friends of Polevoy to uncover the mystery.

Returning to his native village at the end of his military service, Victor (Yuri Sarantsev) brought his bride into the house - and soon they got married. Victor works on the collective farm with great enthusiasm, he is appointed a foreman, but the happiness of old Danila, Victor’s father, is overshadowed by dirty gossip - as if Victor’s father is not he, but Shandybovich, whose unseemly deeds were recently exposed by Victor.

Civil war. Polish interventionists approach Berezina. The Red Army temporarily leaves Belarusian lands. Partisan detachments are organized, one of which is led by Bolshevik Stepan. His brother, who is in collusion with Polish spy Kapusta, is also in this detachment. With Kapusta's help, Polish lancers who have appeared in the village reach the partisan camp and capture the headquarters. Yanko manages to warn the headquarters about the movement of the White Poles, and the partisans are forced to retreat through impassable swamps. They manage to escape and join the Red Army, which occupies Minsk on July 11.
