NRGaetano Donizetti’s comic opera *Don Pasquale* returns to Teatro alla Scala in a 2018 production directed by Davide Livermore and conducted by Riccardo Chailly. Set in a dreamlike, black-and-white Rome inspired by Italian cinema of the 1950s, the staging blends cinematic references, visual spectacle and bittersweet comedy. Ambrogio Maestri stars as the aging bachelor Don Pasquale, alongside Rosa Feola as Norina, René Barbera as Ernesto and Mattia Olivieri as Dr. Malatesta. Elaborate sets by Livermore and Giò Forma, colourful costumes by Gianluca Falaschi and video design by D-WOK bring this classic tale of deception, romance and generational conflict to life.

6.0Umberto Giordano’s exhilarating drama returns to the Met repertory for the first time in 25 years. Packed with memorable melodies, showstopping arias, and explosive confrontations, Fedora requires a cast of thrilling voices to take flight, and the Met’s new production promises to deliver. Soprano Sonya Yoncheva, one of today’s most riveting artists, sings the title role of the 19th-century Russian princess who falls in love with her fiancé’s murderer, Count Loris, sung by star tenor Piotr Beczała. Soprano Rosa Feola is the Countess Olga, Fedora’s confidante, and baritone Artur Ruciński is the diplomat De Siriex, with much-loved Met maestro Marco Armiliato conducting. Director David McVicar delivers a detailed and dramatic staging based around an ingenious fixed set that, like a Russian nesting doll, unfolds to reveal the opera’s three distinctive settings—a palace in St. Petersburg, a fashionable Parisian salon, and a picturesque villa in the Swiss Alps.

7.0One of opera’s grimmest tragedies received a powerful new production during the 2021–22 season when director Bartlett Sher unveiled his Weimar-era staging of Verdi’s Rigoletto. In this performance, recorded as part of the company’s Live in HD series of cinema transmissions, commanding American baritone Quinn Kelsey gives a searing portrayal of the title character, a deformed court jester determined to protect the virtue of his daughter, Gilda, sung by radiant soprano Rosa Feola. His debauched employer, the Duke of Mantua, is tenor Piotr Beczała, with dynamic young maestro Daniele Rustioni on the podium to lead a cast that also features bass Andrea Mastroni as the assassin Sparafucile and mezzo-soprano Varduhi Abrahamyan as Maddalena.
