An apocryphal tale from the Book of Genesis. Jacob, the son of Isaac, sees in a dream a staircase, the base of which rests on the earth, and the top reaches heaven; angels ascend and descend on it. Every step of the ladder and every movement along it in this vision has its own meaning. Marc Chagall, using a metaphorical image from Scripture, presented in his paintings the interweaving and intertwining of the lives of the inhabitants of the hinterland, each of whom has his own Jacob's ladder, along which angels move — the arbiters of their destinies.

The cartoon consists of several mini-cartoons: "Liar" based on a poem by D. Kharms, about a boy who fantasized a lot and passed everything off as the truth, but no one believed him. "The Key" is based on a poem by O. Grigoriev, about an old grandmother who left a key at home, but her granddaughter did not open the door for her. "The Ball" is about a boy who dreamed of becoming a football player and therefore could not part with the ball.

This short film tells a love story in a provincial city. The film is full of humor, wonder and national color.

The film is based on the memories of the father of the film director, who was accidentally arrested during the civil war in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. While the main character is waiting for his fate, he recalls fragments from his childhood.

The film is a memory of Alexei Turkus's father, the famous architect Mikhail Turkus. In the film there is not a word about the profession of the father, but only the tenderness and enthusiastic fantasies of the child, who, according to the joking stories of the pope, imagined him either as a commander or a robber.
