Two women—a fashion executive and her young model—experience parallel romantic disappointments during a trip to Gothenburg, exposing generational differences in desire, illusion, and emotional endurance. A transitional work in Ingmar Bergman’s mid-1950s cinema.

Inga starts working as a trainee at Skå Barnby at Färingsö outside Stockholm. There she gets acquainted with people living nearby. Soon disturbances and conflicts arise between them.

Erik Levin leases the farm to his son and retires. In order not to be in the way of the son, he moves to a retirement home, where he looks forward to meeting people of his own age.

The brothers Kalle and Pär, each without the other's knowledge, win money on state bonds. Per opens a small shop in Stockholm and Kalle helps him. The wholesaler Ivar Olsson tries to swindle them.
