The television series, based on Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name, is one of the most impressive television adaptations of a literary work. Filmed in 1963 over a period of four months at the RAI headquarters in Via Teulada, it is set in France between 1815 and 1833.

The story follows Mario, a college senior torn between his sincere, simple love for Dorina, a seamstress, and his infatuation with the charming, mature Elena, a woman from the upper middle class.

Four people are killed in a saloon hold-up. The townspeople pin the murders on local no-count black sheep Chester Conway. Lawyer Jeff Plummer and prostitute Polly Winters don't believe that Chester is guilty of these crimes, so they hire smooth and suave gunman Silver to prove Chester's innocence and find the real killers.
