A story about the life of Eero, a machine shop worker, and his younger brother Martin in the working-class neighborhoods of Helsinki, and the change brought about by a conductor and his daughter who move in next door.

A lock factory worker Pertti would like to marry his girlfriend Verna, but fears they don't have enough money. His brother Martti is a member of a youth gang that is planning a robbery with three other young men. When the boys have to flee at the time of the robbery, Pertti who secretly shadowed them sees an opportunity to solve his money problem.

Timo learns about his grandfather Santeri's background in the workers' sports movement. Inspired by this, he begins to encourage his alcoholic father to practice his own sport, javelin throwing.

Pekka Puupää and Pätkä, who return to Helsinki from an unsuccessful variety show tour, are forced into refresher training, where they are trained as frogmen. Merchant Iivari encounters significant challenges in his entrepreneurial career when Merthen, a commercial counselor, attempts to prevent his success. Merthen's daughter Verna falls in love with the honest Iivari, who is not acceptable as a son-in-law to the Merthen family.
