In the 18th century, Robert's beloved Helena is forced to marry the cruel Henrik Brest. Robert becomes Roope the Pirate, the most famous pirate in the Baltic Sea, whose legendary life includes scheming and partying, sword fights and women's adventures.

A mysterious traveler encounters Dr. Mirjami and Inga on the road. They lure the young man to a boarding house, where their husbands already live, along with the poet Annikki, the boarding house landlady Mrs. Soisalo, and her lover Einar. All four women feel attracted to the traveler, who begins to receive anonymous love letters.

Sinikka, the young mistress of the Lenteelä house, gets into a relationship with her neighbor Antti while her husband Jukka is away at the front. The couple becomes the subject of gossip throughout the village, and Sinikka, feeling guilty, seeks reconciliation from her husband and the community. Her mother-in-law, who is hostile towards her daughter-in-law, also wants reconciliation.
