The quiet life of an extended family is shaken up when a circus comes into town.

But Carla is more successful than he is and gets a gig at La Scala in Milan. Through her connections, she manages to find a publisher for Michele's opera. But when Michele learns what the publisher really thinks of his work, he leaves and abandons Carla. A year later, Carla finds Michele again. He has since become a sought-after composer, but is embittered because he is only successful with pop songs. His new revue "Dream Music," a reworking of his opera, is about to premiere. Carla then arranges for Michele's original opera to premiere in Budapest with her in the lead role.

A respectable woman in her 50s inherits a local night club from her husband in a divorce settlement, provided that she shows up there every night at 10:00pm for a month. In spite of eny and provocation, she manages to meet the terms.

Soon enough, a warrant is issued, and eventually both men – the thief and the innocent guy – are arrested. But since all the red tape of the government causes even more confusion, the odyssey of the victim searching for his lost identity has just started.

The young emperor Joseph II of Austria and Hungary is not interested in romance and marriage, and every time his mother makes arrangements for him to meet eligible young ladies, he escapes under some pretense. When Werner finally discovers the truth, a conflict develops (duhh!), which can only be solved by Paula finding a man her own age (thank you).

The clever Zacharias Bräsig is a good friend to all and tries to help out, where he can. Bräsig also meddles in the relationships of young people, so that by the end of the film, there's a double marriage.

An entire neighborhood is in an uproar because the Maier family is keeping their prize-winning rooster, Otto, on the balcony of their apartment. And now, every morning, the rooster is waking up the entire street with its dawn greeting. Thus, the neighborhood comes up with a plan to convince the Maiers to find a new place for the rooster to live (preferably amidst a bed of potatoes and onions). From that point on, Tamara appears as "Sikkim Khan" and the "Diamond King" van Houten falls in love with her. On a ship of the South American Line, they meet and get to know each other better. When an emerald worth half a million is stolen, Tamara declares herself to be the thief, so as to protect an old colleague of her father, who wants to save the circus with the money from the stolen jewel.
