1830 Värmland, Sweden. Master Karl Arthur Ekenstedt comes to aid the Minister at Crosss Church. He falls in love with Charlotte Löwensköld, housekeeper in the rectory. They get engaged. Charlotte is full of life, energetic and practical. Karl Arthur struggle with his faith and God.

This farce cocerns Sweden's King Gustav (Per Oscarsson who plays all the lead roles). The royal monarchs of three major European countries are patiently or not-so-patiently hovering on the sidelines while watching the future King Gustav closely. No single king appears to possess the brains he was born with, so history seems to be made by default, as it were. Gustav does blunder around, but not enough to miss being crowned king. As a result, France, England, and Germany invade Sweden hoping to take by force what they could not gain by incompetence.

Barbro is a young, happy girl, with a lot of male acquaintances. She unfortunately meets men that infects her with syphilis. Without being aware of this Barbro transmits the disease to other men. Medical doctor Bernard tries to help her.

The maid quits at the Sommer family household and because no one in the family can cook they desperately needs a new maid. The son in the family, Åke, is a famous actor at the theater and when the up and coming actress Marianne (who also has a crush on the famous Åke) hears about the Sommers needing a new maid, she seizes the opportunity and goes undercover as a maid to get closer to Åke and the big roles in the theater.

In a movie studio, a fight scene is underway. The hero, played by Allan Bergner, will make an impression on the heroine, played by Ylva Vendel. But Allan is not prepared to give more than one pale hint of fight; he wants to be presentable in later scenes as well. The director wears his hair.

A chief physician at a women's clinic is against abortion. He strongly influence the patients not to abort. But there are doctors who think differently.

Ingrid Eriksson, a social worker, decides to find out something about the problems facing housemaids and gets herself a job as one at the home of John Willman's family. John's son, Åke, falls in love with her and numerous complications arise before the course of true love runs smoothly.

"Our Lord goes on vacation" - Mr. Schwartz and Mr. White looks like ordinary people but are actually supernaturals. Schwartz is emitted by the Devil to spread evil among the people and the White of God to spread goodness.

Lars Levi Laestadius (1800-1861), founded a Lutheran revival movement in the early 19th century in the north parts of Sweden. It had tremendous impact on local people and the followers increased rapidly. Puritanism and suffering went hand in hand on the narrow road to the kingdom of heaven.
