A young filmmaker returns to the village where she was born – a hamlet in the north of France – to investigate a strange story about a terrorist threat. She starts with members of her own family, and doesn’t have to go much further. The misunderstanding – as it turns out to be – shows above all how alarmist news items and political machinations in the cities can take on a life of their own, deep in the hinterland.

Whilst doing research on the Soviet-Afghan War, documentary filmmaker Maryna meets Vyacheslav, an ex-soldier with a unique archive of footage, notes, personal journals and photographs taken by now deceased members of his batallion during the conflict, causing them both to learn about confronting the past and overcoming the horrors of war in the wake of a new Russian agression now threatening Ukraine.

Was arrested by the Gestapo and detained at Grini concentration camp in Norway. For five weeks. After the war he moved to East Berlin and proclaimed himself a dear friend of the GDR. Later he was deported and returned to Sweden. A time of fencing and small crimes followed. Escaped to Brussels at first and later Vienna. He was, as Juan Delgada, hired by the Vienna Opera to create new operettas. And was very successful. Johnny Bode died exhausted alone and abandoned in Malmö during the summer of 1983.

The American photographer Nick is in an idyllic coastal town in Sweden, working for a tourism campaign. During her stay, Nick gets drawn into an infected conflict between the town’s locals and the tourists.

This is the night is a film-poetic encounter; a homeless language, a forgotten place, a prophetic poem. The language is Yiddish, the site the Jewish cemetery in Warsaw with its 200,000 dilapidated graves and the poem published by Anna Margolin in New York in 1929.
