From the first paying public screening on December 28, 1895, at the Grand Café in Paris, to the present day, this film tells the story of movie theaters over a century of existence. Accompanied by a commentary, a skilful montage of archive footage, some of it previously unseen, traces this evolution - from the golden age of the Gaumont-Palace and the Grand-Rex to the era of multi-screen complexes - illuminated by memories and testimonials from exhibitors, architects and cinema professionals.

When film director Mathieu casts a famous actress to portray a character based on his aspiring-actress wife, he creates a rift in his marriage. French filmmaker Philippe Garrel's family members portray versions of themselves in this lyrical drama.

Emmanuel, 37, lives in Paris with his wife, Irene, and his daughter Anne, 14 years old. He accidentally discovers that Irene is receiving mail in the remaining mail. She refuses to follow Emmanuel to Italy where he has to write a biography of Filippo Lippi. Distraught, Emmanuel decided to leave immediately for Florence.
