Four actresses of the provincial theater are traveling in one compartment on tour to Moscow. They are connected by their love for one person, the director of this theater. However, for some, everything is in the past, and for others in the present.

The film takes place during the first post-war summer in Western Belarus. The war has ended, but peace has yet to return to the region. Denis Meshko, a Suvorov Military School cadet, arrives for vacation in a village where the first Chairman, Uncle Denis, has just been murdered. The villagers suspect local resident Mechislav Khabenok. The cadet decides to avenge the death of his loved one.
