The inhabitants of the Brazilian city of Contagem yearn for a better life. At the core of it all is Selma, a woman dreaming about the heart of the world: it could be anywhere, as long as it's a place where to feel happier.

Graça, a lesbian woman living in Belo Horizonte with her French girlfriend Clara, gives private French lessons to support herself in a large Brazilian metropolis. As an independent Black woman from a lower-middle-class background, she finds herself confronted by the dark side of religious fanaticism when she is forced to live with an extremist evangelical family that gradually involves her in a mysterious plot that leads her to lose her mind.

José Pedro de Freitas, better known as Zé Arigó, was a simple man who lived with his wife Arlete in Congonhas, Minas Gerais. During the 1950s, a time when Spiritism was not as well known and respected in the country, Arigó became a symbol of hope through his surgeries and spiritual cures. Based on a true story, Arigó, with the help of the spirit of Dr. Fritz, performed numerous spiritual surgeries on people from Brazil and the world.
