Prepare yourself for a sensory overload of epic proportions. Nothing less than the history of the universe, the formation of the stars and planets, the origins of matter, and the daunting post-human future that lies ahead are explored in this mind-bending experience. Photon is an ultra-ambitious summation of human knowledge that combines stunning phantasmagoric visuals and a dense but engaging, even dryly humorous, voiceover in what you might call an experimental science lesson—a crash course in, well, everything. How did we come to be? How are we as we are? The biggest questions are asked, and answered, with inventiveness and aplomb. Photon even delves into the biological foundations of human behaviours such as violence and alcoholism. Dazzling animation visualizes that which we could otherwise not see, ingeniously illustrating details of quantum physics. It’s a strong dose of eye and brain candy in equal measure.

A narrative portrait of Norman, an egotistical, cynical, and potentially sociopathic academic who views human biography as fuel for his intellectual pursuits. The film serves as a character study of this misanthropic scientist as he delivers a series of extended, computer-animated lectures on neurological, philosophical, sociological, and anthropological questions. Intertwined with these complex digital presentations is the chaotic unraveling of his failing personal relationships and torrid romantic entanglements. Grounded heavily in genetics and neuroscience, Norman attempts to use rigid biological laws to rationalize human emotion and his own deep-seated contempt for his surroundings.

The visualisation simulating the camera movement guides the viewer through minimalist interiors featuring paintings that were also on display at the gallery. Then, we witness a change into an abstract space, filled with shapes generated and controlled by crowd simulation software.

A stroll through a virtual edifice. Norman Leto develops here his interest in the computer-based construction of virtual worlds, blending the real and the imaginary. The interiors of the building merge hotel, exhibition and residential functions and have been modelled on those which exist in reality. However, among real objects there are some that belong exclusively to the virtual world. Sterile hotel lavatories host small shapes – the so-called “delegates”, i.e. units of artificial intelligence whose computer-controlled movements correspond to social processes translated to the language of mathematics. Some of the individuals in the group of “delegates”, however, are not fit to live in society – they function against the mathematical rules and generate chaos within the community.
