Young Polish nobleman Jakub is saved from imprisonment by a stranger. In return, the stranger wants to obtain a list of Jakub’s fellow conspirators. As he follows his mysterious savior across the country, Jakub is affected by the overall chaos and moral corruption; he goes insane and becomes a mass murderer.

Seventh-grade students are just starting their studies in a newly opened school in a small town in the Recovered Territories, right after the end of the war. A young doctor has been assigned to a hospital in the provinces, in the lakes district of northern Poland. The area is a playground with hunting lodges for the priviledged, the local politicians cover up any leaks to the public. The doctor discovers a case of drunken driving but is silenced by blackmail in the court. He tries to fight back but has a love affair with the unfaithful wife of the town's Mayor.

The protagonist of the film is Józek Mikuła, a "peasant worker" who runs a small farm with his mother and makes a living as a truck driver at a nearby cement plant. When one day he wins a million in a toto-lottery, news of his unexpected fortune spreads rapidly through the village. Józek decides to invest the money wisely: he buys more land, renovates farm buildings, brings in machinery. He has a gesture - he funds the village with a color TV, which he installs in the clubhouse. But neighbors are stung by Józek's unexpected wealth.

Christina, a 32-year-old journalist, actually wanted to go on vacation in Provence. But a colleague breaks his leg and of course she has to stand in for him. Shortly before her departure to Masuria, her car is stolen and Christina's grandmother Elsa only lends her the car if she can go with her. Christina really likes her grandmother, but as a travel companion she is a pain in the neck and Christina is constantly at loggerheads with the Polish photographer Marek. But this trip will change the 32-year-old journalist's life. Christina finds out why her grandmother is accompanying her.
