The first installment in the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise, which has shipped over 30 million copies worldwide, has been adapted into a live action work that remains almost faithful to the original. Produced by the cast and staff of the hugely popular franchise Unification of Japan, which depicts the Japanese underworld, the adaptation is fully supervised by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. The story follows the events leading up to the video game Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties.

After being possessed by the ghost of vengeful hitman Kudo, college student Fumika Matsuoka agrees to help him finish his quest for revenge from beyond the grave.

The body of Kikumura, the attacker who was supposed to have been killed by Himuro, Tamura, and Kawatani, has disappeared. Himuro and his friends learn from arms dealer Jimmy Ogata that the guns the attackers had were made in China, and they suspect that there are remnants of the semi-grey group "Cobra." Then, he ends up looking for Kikumura, who was supposed to be dead...

During the funeral of Senior Advisor Yudai Kanou (Yudai Ishiyama), the Souryukai executives prepare for battle against the Fourth-Generation Sakata family, who were behind Kanou's murder. However, Chairman Yukihiro Kawaji (Hitoshi Ozawa), wary of the Anti-Boryokudan Law, hesitates to make the first move. Thus, instead of starting a full-scale gang war, he entrusts Takeshi Kanzaki (Hitomi Matsuda) with carrying out revenge on the direct perpetrators and mastermind. Where had Kanou's plans leaked from? Tatsumi of the Marukami-kai is isolated from the Marukami-kai and is chased away by the Kyowa-kai and the Marukami-kai. Himuro invites Tatsumi and his friends to Nagoya and attempts to settle the matter, but ends in failure. Tatsumi escapes and gets the civilians involved, and as the situation worsens, Himuro tries to set a trap for Tatsumi and his friends.

The Toyokai leadership fends off attackers, but the assailants’ identity and motives remain unclear. Suspecting the rival Teito Union, Uesugi grows wary. Assigned to Uesugi’s crew, Soma digs into their networks—uncovering traces of former Teito members like Sudo Reiji, who has fled overseas.

With Munakata Seizo as boss, Sawamura Ryuichi and Soma Kunihito establish the Munakata-gumi under the banner of Resshikai. Soon after, Shindo-gumi’s Shimaki, carrying the missing ransom money, shows up at Munakata’s ramen shop. Meanwhile in Kyushu, Shindo-gumi schemes with the infamous Moji family for profit.

Despite the peace efforts of Souryukai's Senior Advisor Yudai Kanou (Yudai Ishiyama), the conflict between the Souryukai and Sakata family only intensifies. Seizo Munakata, taken in by Shigemasa Mukai, the boss of the Toyo-kai, runs a ramen shop while secretly handling the syndicate’s underground dealings. Former biker gang leader Ryuichi Sawamura and ex-finance bureaucrat Kunihito Soma decide to follow Munakata’s lead. But trouble strikes when Mukai’s wife, Harue, and granddaughter, Shizuka, are abducted by unknown assailants.

A sudden notice of succession from the Hasekai arrived from the Marugami-kai. Himuro (Yasukaze Motomiya) and Tamura (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi) were furious and stormed into the ceremony. Mita (Shun Sugata) saw this as a declaration of war and vowed decisive action. The police, led by Matsumiya (Gento Hongo), ramped up surveillance on the rising tension between the Kyowakai and Marugami-kai, leading to the arrest of Teru (Yutaka Kyan) and Saito (Katsuya), escalating the crisis. Amid rising tension in the Kyowakai, Nakajima (Yoshimi Tachi) sought revenge for Shoji’s death. Concerned about Minami (Rin Asuka) due to Reiko’s (Reira Arai) involvement, Himuro and the others were encouraged by Kawata (Hitoshi Ozawa) to proceed. Himuro’s plan set up a clash between Kuramoto Kogyo and the Keihin Rengo-kai. Though it initially went smoothly, Jun (Goro Washida) and Chosaku (Keishi Kawaguchi) interfered, creating new complications.

The incident occurred without any warning. A member of the Kyowakai was shot in Kyoto. This shooting incident, which took place in Kansai—the very region Kyowakai was supposed to have unified—sent shockwaves through Himuro (Yasukaze Motomiya) and his men. As Himuro and Tamura (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi) hurriedly prepared for an emergency executive meeting in Kobe, they were stopped by Kuroiwa (Susumu Terajima ) from the Hachiwari Police Department, who came to visit the Himuro-gumi. According to Kuroiwa, Matsumiya (Hongo Gen) from the special investigation unit believed that this incident was an internal conflict within the Kyowakai. Himuro and Tamura learned that the reason for this suspicion was a clash between Hayashida (Shu Ehara) and Kamiyama (Naoki Yamazaki) over a land redevelopment project in Kyoto. Determined to get to the bottom of the matter, they set out for Kyoto. In that area, various people’s emotions and interests were intricately intertwined…

After uncovering Ruby’s true identity, Himuro (Yasukaze Motomiya) and Tamura (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi) discover a cache of firearms and drugs. They inform only Special Investigation officer Sahara (Takayuki Kinba) that the incidents were not orchestrated by Kyowakai or the Marugami-kai, urging him to investigate those behind the scenes. Both Himuro and Sahara suspect corruption within the police, with Sahara casting doubt on Matsumiya (Gen Hongo) and others. As police suddenly move to arrest Mita (Shun Sugata), Himuro and Sahara find it suspicious that attention shifts from Kyowakai to the Marugami-kai following Mikawa’s (Yasuhiro Arai) appointment as deputy commissioner. Sahara struggles to investigate Mikawa due to his ties to the powerful Yoshioka family. Meanwhile, suspecting religion is linked to an impending terror plot, Himuro begins reaching out to those connected to the World Kamome Church.

After a Kyowakai member is killed, detectives Shima and Hayami investigate the case, which is connected to recent unsolved murders. Kyowakai also launches their own investigation to avenge their comrade, intertwining their efforts with the police. The case involves a large organization framing Kyowakai.

Himuro and his friends are criticized by Hirono-gumi members, but they barely escape. Hirono's aim is to start a conflict between Himuro and Nakamori, and then take the sake cup from Sakoda. Himuro and his friends notice Hirono's plan, but follow the plan and send a message to Nakamori.

Through Shindo-gumi’s maneuvering, Amano Shuji is abducted by the Moji family—along with his daughter Mari. Their ally Shimaki, revealed to be secretly tied to Shindo-gumi, claims he was working as a double agent. He then plants a hidden mic before meeting Shindo-gumi’s Onoue Tatsuhiko.

While drinking in Kobe, Baba drunkenly orders Himuro and others to “crush Marugami,” and the remark quickly spreads to Marugami and investigators. Baba then orders a manhunt, but Hirakawa objects and questions why the “Adachi-kai,” a group of delinquent gangs that fled Kyowakai’s control and formed in Tohoku, had been ignored. Himuro returns briefly to Kobe with Joji (Takashi Kitadai), reflecting on how Kobe has become home and on their violent past in Yokohama. Meanwhile in Kobe, a delinquent group led by Isamu (Hidemi Higa) and Nobumitsu (Takuya Negishi), reminiscent of the younger Himuro and Tamura, causes trouble in Masaki-gumi territory. Following Kawatani’s (Hitoshi Ozawa) orders, Joji visits Masaki-gumi with Ishizawa (Hiroto Honda) and Yamamura (Kenta Kawasaki), but is delayed by Masaki’s (Yoshiaki Umegaki) old-fashioned lecturing. Soon after, a Masaki-gumi member reports being robbed by Isamu’s group. Although Joji offers to help, he is turned away. Not long after, Isamu and his crew appear at the Masaki-gumi gambling den, threatening to ignite a new conflict.

Following the death of acting chairman Baba (Akihiko Kuwata), Kyowakai continues its hunt for Adachi (Atsushi Arai), while the Marugami-kai and the Special Investigation Unit closely monitor their movements. As expected by Himuro (Yasukaze Motomiya), Adachi contacts the Keihin Alliance's Sakagami (Yoshiki Kanahashi), prompting the Yamazaki Ichimon to stake out the group's key locations. Adachi attempts to strike a deal with Sunaga (Masataka Naruse) but flees when it falls through, escaping Teru (Yutaka Kyan) and Ryuji (Tatsuya Kishida). Himuro and Tamura (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi) then change tactics by kidnapping Sunaga. Meanwhile, reports pour in that Yamazaki faction members are attacking the Keihin Alliance's affiliated groups, leaving everyone to wonder what Himuro's true plan is.

Shimazu Clan's third-generation boss, Tetsuo Sakuragi (Yasukaze Motomiya), and his sworn brother, Kenichi Kanamori (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi), are set to be released from prison. In the afternoon, Himuro (Yasukaze Motomiya) and the others enjoy coffee brewed by Tora (Miyabi Koteyama). While discussing the taste of coffee with Tamura (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi) and Hasegawa (Daisuke Ohyama), Joji (Takashi Kitadai) starts reminiscing about the time he joined the gang.

With Kyowakai’s new leadership in place, Himuro (Yasukaze Motomiya) becomes its fourth chairman and Tamura (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi) becomes Wakagashira. Former Keihin Rengokai leader Sunaga (Masataka Naruse) becomes shateigashira after the group is absorbed into Kyowakai. Soon after, Sunaga warns that Chinese delinquents are causing trouble in Yokohama, and former Keihin chairman Sakagami is kidnapped by a Chinese group. Himuro and Tamura rush to rescue Sakagami, now considered a brother, and defeat his captors. Meanwhile, a conflict between Chinese groups and an extremist nationalist resident over a condominium leads to the stabbing death of café employee Han. The café is also forced to vacate after its landlord changes. Determined to uphold their code of protecting the weak, Kyowakai uncovers the Chinese organization Makino Group behind these incidents.

Meanwhile, at the Souryukai, Vice Chairman Shinji Wakamiya (Kazuyoshi Ozawa) and the others begin to prepare for retaliation against the Sakata family. The tension between both sides rapidly escalates — following emergency surgery, Kanzaki narrowly escapes death. Then, at Kawaji's command, the battle finally ignites!!

Himuro (Yasukaze Motomiya) and Tamura (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi) returned to Tokyo to confront Okada (Yuki Matsumura). However, waiting for them was a notice of succession from the Hasekai, which was supposed to be under the Kyowakai's control. Upon learning that Okada’s faction had ties to the Hasekai's new successor, Himuro immediately severed ties, bringing the direct showdown between the Kyowakai and Marugami-kai closer. Meanwhile, Reiko (Reira Arai), who had been hiding with Genji (Kuroishi Takahiro), continued living in hiding, harboring distrust towards Genji and others. Despite this, she remained focused on her vengeance against the Kyowakai. While Himuro and the others tried to clear up Reiko's misunderstanding for Minami (Rin Asuka), Reiko refused to listen. Gradually, she became more involved with Okada’s faction, who were willing to use anything for the war against the Kyowakai.

Due to Kikumura's resignation, Tsurumi-gumi was disbanded. The former Tsurumi-gumi Wakagashira is arrested, and the former Tsurumi-gumi Wakagami assistant is questioned. Renji Himuro is cornered after the president Yuichi Kawatani and his assistant Wakagashira Yuto Tamura are arrested in the Marukami-kai's plan to destroy the Kyowa-kai. In order to overthrow the Sekine Cabinet, which has close ties with the Marukami-kai, Himuro supports his opponent, former Secretary-General Ishida, in the next presidential election, and tries to stop the Marukami-kai's plot.

The third-generation head of the Sakata family, Tatsuichi Kuroki (Jiro Dan), has retired. The successor to his position, however, is none other than Hiroshi Niwa (Shiro Shimomoto), who stands opposed to Wakagashira Yukihiro Kawaji (Hitoshi Ozawa)! Kyowa-kai Himuro and Marukami-kai Tsurumi are in a tense state of conflict. The conflict between the two groups intensified due to internal disputes between the Yokohama and Fujishiro groups. Meanwhile, Himuro's brother Akimoto, a member of the Marukami-kai leadership, dies of illness. With the deterrence of East-West conflict gone, tensions between the Kyowa-kai and the Marukami-kai reach a climax.

Three American tourists follow a mysterious map deep into the jungles of Japan searching for an ancient temple. When spirits entrap them, their adventure quickly becomes a horrific nightmare.

Himuro and Tamura put an end to the suffering of Munakata, the leader of the Fujishiro-gumi of the Marukami-kai, and expanded the Kyowa-kai to the Kanto region, but soon after, they receive news of Munakata's suicide. When Himuro saw the suicide note, he became suspicious and concluded that it was the work of Tsurumi of the Marukami-kai, who was the first to discover it. The conflict between Himuro and Tsurumi becomes even more intense.

Flower (Osawa Mikio), a kind-hearted assassin who offers flowers to the dead, has been hiding out in a safe house with the help of his friend Momoko (Ayano). Flower is in hiding because Mother (Mizutani Kei), the leader of the dark assassin army he once belonged to and escaped from, and her men are after his life. What is their purpose?

Himuro and Tamura of the Kyowa-kai discover that the conflict with the Marukami-kai involving the Yokohama Fujishiro-gumi is a secret maneuver between the Chinatown mafia and the half-grey group Kobura. Having discovered that they have a common enemy, the Kyowa-kai and Marukami-kai formulate a joint strategy, but Himuro and Tsurumi of the Marukami-kai are at odds over the dead Ryuji Munakata.

The Shimazu Clan of South Osaka, a longstanding yakuza group, built its foundation in the port cargo handling industry and maintained its independence as a traditional gambling syndicate. Tetsuo Sakuragi (Yasukaze Motomiya) formed a brotherly bond with Kenichi Kanamori (Yoshiyuki Yamaguchi) while in prison and, upon release, began serving as an executive for the Shimazu Clan. However, after two police raids disrupted their gambling operations, Sakuragi interrogates a regular customer, Hirata, and uncovers that it was orchestrated by the Koga Family. Sakuragi and Kanamori confront Tatsumi (Takashi Shigematsu) at his office, who had been manipulating Hirata, but Kanamori is shot by a Koga Family member. The long-standing cold war between the Shimazu Clan and the Koga Family erupts into full-blown conflict...!!

The fall of Yoshimoto Imanishi spreads Nobunaga Oriki’s (Hitoshi Ozawa) reputation across Japan. Alarmed, National Police Agency Director Ichijo (Masahiko Tsugawa) orders their destruction. Meanwhile, Ieyasu Tokusawa (Yasukaze Motomiya) abandons the Imanishi-gumi, declaring independence as the Tokusawa-gumi. Upon learning this, Nobunaga extends his hand, joining forces with Tokusawa in pursuit of nationwide unification. Elsewhere, Yoshiaki Ashitaga (Kazuyoshi Ozawa), ousted from the Murohachi Alliance, seeks to rebuild it, turning to Shingen Takebe (Shun Sugata) for aid—but is coldly passed around. And from Fukui, Mitsuhide Akashi (Mikio osawa) of the Amakura-gumi moves the pieces of the board, pulling the Oriki-gumi into the next great upheaval.

Akira's wife walks out on him, leaving him to confide in his gangster brother-in-law. Using only a cryptic note as a clue the two brothers go on a road trip to find his wife. After a series of violent encounters with strangers, Akira meets a prostitute. The pair start a relationship. After Akira finds his wife, he questions whether he still wants to be with her.
