Hashmat Fanaei

A pious old man, who is a proponent of suicide attackers, comes to Kabul to visit his only son, who, after the holy war had remained in the Soviet Union. He had enrolled his son in a religious school "to study the Koran and return to the village as a Mullah". In Kabul he learns that his son had decided to become a divine suicide bomber so as to go to Heaven. The film presents two different forces of the inner world of the protagonist father: paternal feelings and the holy religious ideology. The spectator witnesses how he loses his only son and holy belief. Shot in chaotic and dirty Kabul, the film portrays the incorrect interpretation of religion and the conflict of generations.

Saddled by a senile grandfather and a neglectful father, Mina, an impulsive twelve-year-old Afghan street seller sees her future slipping away when she is forced to neglect her education and walk the streets of Kabul to support her fragmented family. In the seven days that follow her life, Mina’s quest to emancipate her father from the claws of a local drug dealer and her attempt to secretly attend school underlines the current struggle of a young generation of Afghans trying to shake off the echoes of oppression from the Taliban era that continues to haunt those who bore witness to it.

A mini-bus is on a journey across the mountains to Kabul. Each person on the bus has a reason to take this journey. An old man is traveling to give a turkey to his grandchild, as his last wish before dying. However, the main road is blocked by insurgents. They decide to use an alternative road, which is not very secure, and there is still the possibility of getting caught by insurgents.

After failing their university entrance exams, Saboor and his friends decide to enlist in the Afghan army.

Completed in 1991 by the acclaimed director and writer Eng. Latif Ahmadi, "GUMASHTA" stands as a poignant reflection of societal realities, human struggle, and justice. Due to the outbreak of the Afghan civil war shortly after its completion, this film never received its official theatrical premiere. For over three decades, it remained locked away in the archives—an untouched time capsule of a golden era of Afghan filmmaking. Now, for the very first time, the original Final Cut of the film is being presented to the public exactly as it was intended to be seen.
