Lucania, or the Basilicata, is a region in southern Italy where industrious farmhands have inexorably worked the hills planted with wheat for thousands of years. The labor of yore and the modern farmers of today coexist in a single era, caring for the land, crops and livestock, as the seasons come and go. Their sweat and tears are sublimated by Guastamacchia, a farmhand and songster who crosses the region as a day laborer. His voice evokes the tales of survival of a rural community marked by decades-long labor struggles and militancy. For these workers, who have transmitted their stories orally only, song is their elected form of speech, their universal language. The music flows to the verses of Rocco Scotellaro, the bard of freedom for the land workers, a militant among them and on the printed page. In what is left of the rural culture of the 20th century, the farm workers strain to hand down ancestral practices to a future as yet unclear.

Where is the line between memory and reality? Michele returns to his hometown "Rutunn'" after many years and as an old man. Walking through the streets of his village he arrives at his old house, where memories emerge from the silence and dust: his son still young, his wife, music from another era and a terrace overlooking a limitless horizon. He sinks into the memory, he lives it as if it was all happening here and now. However, he has never been able to return to that house.

1960. Vincenzo is an enterprising and determined young man who, at the age of just eleven, decides to run away from a small village in Basilicata, abandoning his family to take refuge in the capital with his shoemaker brother. Against the backdrop of an Italy in the midst of its economic boom, he begins working in a bar and graduates from elementary school. Everything seems to be going well, but a sad discovery turns his life upside down. Vincenzo seeks further redemption for himself and his brother by opening a business and thus consolidating his social standing in the capital, but always with the regret of not having his family of origin, especially his brother Giovanni, close by. He returns to his hometown as a grown man, to the bedside of his dying father, bringing with him the memories of a child, a man who was a winner for his people, but deeply defeated and a victim of regret for a life lived halfway.
