Lauri and Anna are released from prison. They run into trouble when they cannot find work because of their past. Lauri obtains false identity papers, which enable him to get a job at a factory. A dangerous criminal named Asseri begins blackmailing Lauri, who is using the alias "Pentti Tahvana." Lauri's true identity is revealed in connection with the murder of Kaalep, the factory's night watchman.

Colonel Barring has purchased the Maanala estate, where strange things are happening. She wants to cancel the sale and writes to Major Hector, who is acting as the owner's representative. Engineering student Petteri and retired captain Jere Renkonen arrive in Terijoki as guests of architect Matti Marras at the villa he has rented. In the midst of everything, the owner of the villa, Russian émigré prince Asatiánts, arrives with his niece Darja. Soon Nieminen will be the competing with sergeant major Vasikainen for the affections of the colonel's cook Vieno.

St.Petersburg, 1830. An arrogant Finnish baron is playing cards with a Russian officer. Needless to say, the Finn wins and the Russian gets extremely annoyed. The situation is not helped by the fact that the baron has been seeing a girl that the Russian officer has also set his eyes on. They decide to have a duel and after the Finn wins fair and square, he has to escape because the untrustworthy Russians are after him.

The lazy but resourceful farmhand Hemminki and the bookworm Lauri initially struggle to cope in the army, but the company commander's cook Mimmi and the captain's daughter Elli help them adapt to discipline and orders.

The S/S Vellamo heads to Alexandria with Kaarina, the daughter of the ship's owner Hallerman, on board. As Kaarina trades places with the family's housekeeper Marja, first mate Yrjö takes a liking to Marja whom he believes to be miss Hallerman. Meanwhile Kaarina, pretending to be a member of the cleaning staff, starts getting close with lower ranking officer Kalle Aaltonen.

Old Virtanen is a respected night watchman at a textile factory and a single father to his daughter Aino, who is about to graduate from high school. The heartless factory owner Kuusela fires Virtanen, who is forced to look for a new job. When Aino, who is in love with the manager's son Veikko, disappears after her graduation party, her father, who has fallen ill with worry, is overcome with despair.

Vinski inherits a general store in Ihantala from his aunt, which he starts running with his friend Lapatossu. The friends face fierce competition from the greedy merchant Juhos. The resourceful Lapatossu solves the problems of the villagers and evacuees in between business transactions.

An artist bases a painting for a revealing lingerie ad on a photo of a girl he had found torn from a magazine, not knowing that the girl is in fact the daughter of the Finnish minister of finance. A scandal is about to erupt, and the artist is given 48 hours to find a strikingly similar-looking female model who could serve as his alibi. The minister's daughter decides to fool the artist by pretending to be a lowly girl of the streets, whom the artist then recruits as his "model".

Raili moves away from her mean aunts. The young woman enjoys her independent life, but debt, a deceitful boyfriend, and getting fired from her office job get her into trouble. However, Raili's uncle Salomoni and his wife Salli support their relative. Olli, a lawyer, also wants to help Raili, who has fallen victim to blackmail.

To top it all off, Lasse must find the will, which unfortunately disappears inside a framed movie star poster belonging to his roommate Jop.

The ceremonious host Ernesti courts the Hurulas' daughter Pirkko to be his wife. However, she falls in love with the village's new cantor Pelle, but multiple misunderstandings have completely complicated matters.
