Based on the best-selling book by award-winning writer Simon Garfield, four stories from Britain's 'lost decade' (1945 - 1955) are presented from the diaries of four very distinct people. In his book, Garfield selected some of the most expressive diarists, and focused on the post-war years giving a vivid portrait of how Britain coped in the post-war years and how little, or how much, attitudes have changed over the past 60 years. The stories touch on homosexuality, single women making their way in life post-war and a housewife handling the less than welcome return of her husband.

The two 10-year-olds, Charlene Lunnon and Lisa Hoodless, were abducted as they made the short walk to school from their homes in an unnamed seaside town on January 19, 1999. A convicted paedophile drew up in a car, grabbed them, covering their mouths as they screamed, and bundled them into the vehicle's boot. Child protection officers called at Alan Hopkinson's home on a hunch, and found the girls "distressed" but safe, sitting together on a bed. Hopkinson, 45, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, pleaded guilty at Lewes Crown Court to two charges of kidnap, two of false imprisonment and nine assaults. The unemployed computer programmer also admitted 11 counts of assault against two other girls aged 10 and 11 in 1998. Ten other charges of assault would lie on the file, the court was told.

The villagers, many of them in tears, cheered and clapped as the men of Grimethorpe Colliery marched back to work accompanied by the village’s world-famous brass band. The miners and their families had endured months of hardship. It had all been for nothing. The miners had lost the strike called on March 6th 1984. They would lose a lot more in the years to come. But was it a good thing for the country that the miners lost their last battle?
