In a kingdom where the king is forever away on hunts, a restless queen desperate for a child strikes a pact with a devil and soon gives birth to a princess. Raised alongside Štěpán, the chambermaid’s son, the two fall in love, until it’s revealed that on her eighteenth birthday the princess must be wed to Lucifer, so the queen throws a grand ball to betroth her instead to a foreign prince and thwart the infernal bargain.

She was once the wife of an important man, lived in a beautiful house in Hradčany, and was friends with the famous race car driver Eliška Junková. Today, however, she lives somewhere on the outskirts of Prague in a ground-floor apartment overlooking the courtyard and the street, alone and abandoned by practically everyone. Her husband died a long time ago, and her life now consists only of regular meetings with the postwoman, who brings her pension and her favorite motoring magazines, and regular help at the rectory and the local church. She occasionally cooks and bakes for Father Jan, and with her characteristic willingness, she also does his laundry and ironing. However, one of the last certainties in her life collapses unexpectedly quickly—Father Jan is transferred somewhere to Hradec Králové and is replaced by a young priest who is used to doing everything himself. At that moment, a smiling young man with dark glasses and a flower in his hand enters Květa Galová's life.

The next day, Mrs. Věra arrived with only a bag of personal belongings that she had managed to salvage from her flooded apartment in Karlín. But perhaps this woman was looking for something more than just a roof over her head. As it gradually became clear, everything was a little different than it seemed. A cheerful fairy tale about a devil who went among people to find a sinner and found much more. This cheerful fairy tale tells the story of how two young devils, Drmáš and Mezoul, took their final devil exams, but neither of them wanted to finish first! The reward for the winner was to be Lucifer's unpleasant daughter Lucinda. However, the fairy tale is not only about devilish marriage, but also about Drmáš's love for an earthly girl and the fact that, without any of us realizing it, hell is sometimes "devilishly" close!

Even a small child knows that people go to hell for their bad deeds—especially if the devils are targeting evil, envious, exploitative, greedy, and lazy people... Of course, everyone thinks that this applies to everyone else, that they themselves are not really that bad, and, most importantly, that they have plenty of time to improve. Of course, the desire to improve is the first step in the right direction, but Vašek, the hero of our fairy tale, doesn't even have that desire. He quite likes his lazy nature. And why wouldn't he, when his parents, and even his sweetheart Andulka, can't do anything but complain and sigh and hope that maybe one day... The offer of help comes from a completely unexpected source—Beelzebub himself, the chief prince of all devils and she-devils, takes Vašek to hell for a year to re-educate him. Of course, this isn't for free, and there's a nasty trick hidden in it.
