Struggling director Sing is forced to make a Category III film for a triad boss who wants his girlfriend to star, leading to conflicts over artistic integrity, nudity, and his relationship with his own girlfriend.

Hui Man Keung is washed up on a beach near Shanghai. He is taken in by Ding Lik, a kindly beggar who is in love with Fung Ching Ching, the daughter of a prominent gangster. It isn't long before Ding Lik rises through the underworld ranks to become one of the city's most powerful gangsters.

An aging Hong Kong couple move to Australia with their two youngest sons. They stay with a daughter who has already begun a successful career. Meanwhile their eldest daughter lives in Germany and their eldest son remains in Hong Kong. The film explores the different ways the family members cope with isolation and alienation.
