Armando, a former port union leader, lost his left leg after being tortured during General Pinochet's coup d'état. He lives with his niece near the port of Valparaiso. Reclusive and sad, he must face the imposing sailing ship La Esmeralda every day, which served as the base for all the regime's atrocities. But today, Armando is starting a new life.

Jorge comes back to his birthplace, Valparaiso, after a long exile in France. He looks for an important part of his past and to find the traces of a country who prefers to forget his old distress.

This film follows Arturo Belano, alter ego of the writer Roberto Bolaño, shared with his creator a great part of his biography. The director searches for him in places where his stories and novels occur, meeting with real and imaginary characters, in a territory where reality and fiction have a diffuse frontier. A new form of literary biopic, where the writer and his character turn into one and only person.

Roberto has just been laid off due to his advanced age and diabetes. With his severance pay, he decides to buy a van and learn to drive so that he can take a trip with his wife Hilda to the town of their youth, Taltal, on the Pacific coast of the Chilean desert.
