Driven by shame and the fear of losing her prospective husband, Marlia conceals her past. She entrusts her daughter, Jamila—whose father remains unknown—to the care of Mak Zaenab, a woman with whom her connection is also unclear. Johan, a man twice widowed due to his childlessness, eventually marries Marlia under pressure from his mother. After seven childless years, Johan marries again at his mother's insistence. Although not divorced, Marlia feels like a failure and is devastated; she returns to check on her daughter, only to find Mak Zaenab on her deathbed and Jamila—who has gone missing—nearly blind following a sand-play accident.

Because she violated the doctor’s order to not get pregnant again, Yuwono’s wife finally dies while she is pregnant with her third child. Yuwono then marries an office staff, Ningsih. Harun, another co-worker who also loves Ningsih, tries to destroy Yuwono by tampering with the office’s financial report so that Yuwono is arrested and is investigated. Harun then influences Ningsih, regarding her standing as a stepmother, so that Yuwono’s house is taken over and the stepchildren, Netty and Susy, are treated harshly. The two children run away from home, looking for their father, and are separated for a time. When Yuwono is proven innocent and is released, he does not find his children at home and goes around Jakarta to look for them. He finally finds them again.

After being orphaned, Achmad and Komala were taken to the city by their uncle. Their uncle and his wife—who resented the children's presence—took control of the inheritance. Achmad and Komala were constantly scolded and even accused of theft, eventually driving them to run away. While on the run, the two were separated and searched for one another. Set on 24 March 1946 in Bandung, when the city was engulfed in explosions as if it was a sea of fire, the battle scenes between Indonesian and Dutch dominate the film. The main plot line is the conflict of Nani, a Red Cross nurse, who loves Priyatna, an ex PETA fighter. Meanwhile, Hidayat, the commander of Priyatna’s troop, also likes Nani. It is a small story, within a war, that ends with the death of Hidayat.

He becomes a vagabond and is found in a weak condition by Roni and his daughter, Riana. He is taken care of until he is grown up. Then Roni is disabled after an accident and his wife, Nina, becomes a prostitute and joins a crime syndicate. When Rizal and Riana start to have an intimate relationship, Nina throws Rizal out of the house, and then he starts a job as a police informant.
