He gradually embarks upon as life of petty criminality, eventually participating in the theft of a jewelry store during which a bystander is killed.

In a fictitious South American country there's lots of political tension, the labor-unions have all their members on strike. The public demands the return of politician B. from exile. However private trucker Pal can't afford to strike, so he's beaten up and his truck burned. In the headlines he's described as strike-breaker. This is only part of an intrigue which shall get him to murder B.

While conducting interviews with women working in local brothels, Fernando, a journalist, meets Elisa. The woman will tell him her dramatic story, which begins at age 14 when she is raped by her godfather.

In Madrid, during the postwar, Miguel, decide to live supported by women. He has two workers who doesn´t make much headway, for that reason, advised by one of his friends, he decides to go to other town to find a young girl, naive but ambitious in order to take her to the city and make her work.

The film is an image of the Spanish society in form of various anecdotes which happen to the inhabitants and their neighbours of a finca in Madrid.

Finally, because of a fire in the chalet where he lives and where they cook the dirty business of which he is not responsible for, Luciano ends up in jail for covering up and taking on some responsibilities that are not his, fulfilling his role of straw man until the end.

After Paula's suicide, her best friend, Ana, recalls the circumstances that united both women in the past and how they lived a close relationship that could have become more than just a friendship if social conventions had not prevented it.
