A young boy of about 11 struggles to fit in with the usual activities concerned with life, especially at at school . He is somewhat timid and nervous and as a result often finds himself alienated from most of his contemporaries. This manifests itself , for example , in the problems he has with gymnastics and especially swimming. The arrival of a young and sympathetic teacher starts a turnaround in his life.

A fairy tale about love, envy, and intrigue, which are deservedly rewarded by the powerful ruler of the river. The magical ring of the powerful king of the river frees the fisherman's daughter from evil power, but she must never take it off. A wealthy merchant indulges the whims of his beloved wife, who is encouraged by her maid to seek more. She hopes that the merchant will soon lose patience, reject his wife, and that she will take her place. Together, they persuade him to obtain the ring at any cost. Who wouldn't want a donkey that drops gold coins, a hen that lays golden eggs, or even a goldfish that grants all wishes! Adults, let alone rulers, usually know that such phenomena do not belong in the life of an ordinary kingdom. However, this does not apply to the very kind but overly trusting king from our fairy tale! He is completely under the thumb of his cunning advisor Pitras and servant Johan, who make a decent living off their ruler's naivety. Everything changes, however, after Princess Beata returns from her studies. She cannot be fooled, and so hard times begin for the swindlers. Pitras, in order to get rid of the princess, suggests to the king that the girl must marry quickly, preferably somewhere far away. But Beáta is not giving up either. She intends to get rid of the parasites and finds an ally for her plan in the young gardener David, who would do anything for his childhood friend!

The teenage Jirka (J. Procházka) likes to spend time with his aunt (Š. Ranošová) in a secluded village. He does not feel comfortable at home. His mother (J. Vaňková) and stepfather Ivan (P. Pelzer) scrape together every penny to save up for an expensive kitchen set and a Persian carpet. His mother is not very fond of his aunt and does not like Jirka's visits. On her next visit, the aunt gives Jirka her husband's carpentry tools. Jirka meets Jakub (M. Holub), an old carpenter, who helps him repair an old kitchen sideboard. Jakub shows the boy how precious wood the sideboard is made of. The two become friends. However, their mother is about to throw the sideboard away
