Crunch Calhoun, a third-rate motorcycle daredevil and part-time art thief, teams up with his snaky brother to steal one of the most valuable books in the world. But it's not just about the book for Crunch — he's keen to rewrite some chapters of his own past as well.

While riding the bus one day, night watchman Jack Crawford gets distracted by a beautiful girl and has his gun stolen. To get it back, he enlists the help of local wise guy Eddie, and their search reveals the bizarre characters lurking in the strange underworld of a sleepy New Jersey suburb.

This film spans one hot day in New York and follows the lives of many of its inhabitants as they go about their business.
