On 11 July 1997, terrorist organisation Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA) abducted Miguel Ángel Blanco, a 29-year-old councillor for the conservative Partido Popular in Ermua. The cell demanded that the Spanish government transfer their prisoners to jails in the Basque Country, threatening to kill Blanco unless conditions were met within two days.

Leo and Lorea have loved one another. Maybe they still do. But something in them has broken. After five years, their relationship is done. He looks after his sick father, trapped between responsibility and an emotional void that weighs him down. She, caught up in poorly-paid jobs and personal crises, tries to get her life back on track without really knowing where to begin. Ainhoa is born by chance in La Paz (Bolivia); but she grows up in Cuba and, at the age of 21, in 1988, she travels to the Basque Country (Spain) to discover the land of Manex, her father. In the midst of political struggle, she meets Josune, a committed journalist, and her group of friends.

The arrival of Mikel, Mía’s boyfriend, will alter the coexistence and disturb each of the inhabitants of the house in different ways. The tension grows until it explodes in an act of violence with irreversible consequences.

Human bones are found at the Garizmendi farmhouse. Farmers Fermin and Karmen call their son Nestor, who reports the matter to the authorities. But, when the agents turn up, the bones are gone. Suddenly, the bell on the nearby chapel begins to peal. This bad omen announces the coming of tragic events and reopens old wounds within the family and those around it.

Karmele is a Basque nurse exiled to France towards the end of the thirties. There, she meets Txomin, a master trumpeter, with whom she shares a love story and political commitment between Paris, Caracas and the Basque Country. Together, they build a family and seem to have a great mutual understanding; until the time comes to choose between loyalty to family or ideas.

It centers on the ethical and moral dilemma of a gudari (soldier) who is torn between continuing his duty as a soldier, or to abandon his position and comrades and return home with his wife.
