When Max (Eric Stoltz), urged on by "Risk Management," a self-help book for the hapless, decides to approach his fellow ferry-commuter Rory (Susanna Thompson), he hopes simply saying hello might change his life for the better. But Rory only accepts contact by contract. Max finds he can play along. As the two negotiate a whirlwind relationship on paper, Rory slowly lets down her guard; but when her unresolved personal life intervenes in the form of Donald (Kevin Tighe), Max must manage a little more risk than he bargained on.

Marcie has a dream: to own Ed's Tavern, where she's bartender and den mother to a devoted small-town community. But when a developer sets his sights on Ed's wooded land, Marcie's future is upended. As she rallies her people, she finds that an endangered bird may hold the key to preventing the loss of the tavern and saving her community.

Setting out with dreams of launching a new business and finding inner peace, two would-be life coaches hope to resuscitate their stalled careers by leading a women's mindfulness retreat in the Utah wilderness. But when surprise guests, a mudslide, and other minor disasters conspire against them they're forced to take a hard look at their own messy lives over one awkward weekend.

A son sets out to understand his white American father's lost China past, embarking on a journey that becomes a profound exploration of what home really means.
