A look at the lives of a troupe of geishas working in a small seaside resort town. For the most part, their lives consist of greeting boatloads of oversexed businessmen and providing bawdy entertainment through the evening followed by private companionship at night, interspersed with occasional catfights with the rival geisha house. Their routine is suddenly thrown off by the appearance of an abandoned baby in the geishas' dormitory, followed by its disappearance only a short time later. Who could be responsible for such a thing?

Chutaro and Toshiko, a married couple who run a Zenzai shop called "Shiratama Zenzai," lived next to Hozenji Temple. Chutaro was a playboy who easily fell in love with women, and had no interest in business. Even if he occasionally offered to deliver food, it was only to meet the girls. However, Toshiko, who was a reliable person, would always get the better of him with her phone calls, and Chutaro's hopes were always dashed. Then, when a beautiful waitress, Ayako, came to him for advice, Chutaro's heart began to lean towards her. In early summer in Edo, Sanshirō, known for his beautiful singing, is a devoted son living in a tenement with his blind mother Okura. He works as a delivery boy for the caterer "Yaoyorozu." His brother, Chōjirō, who disliked being a plasterer, ran away from home and became a subordinate of the yakuza Yamashita no Gonsuke. On a delivery, Sanshirō catches a vagrant child, Erippē, stealing a flower hairpin from Ochiyo, the daughter of the wealthy merchant Narumiyaya Bunzaimon. Impressed by Sanshirō's character, Bunzaimon considers him as a potential son-in-law for Ochiyo, who admires Sanshirō.
