In the early 1900s, Nikhilesh, a wealthy Westernized Hindu in colonial East Bengal, feels compelled to test the love of his wife, Bimala. He introduces her to his friend Sandip, a politician agitating against British rule, and Bimala is equally taken with both Sandip's anti-colonial fervor and the man himself. Personal and political tensions subsequently flare as the now assertive Bimala has to make a crucial decision.

After her husband passes away at a regressive Shyambazar household, progressive Bandana falls in love with her son's painting mentor, Sudipto Sorcar. However, due to Titli Chatterjee's mother's objection, Bandana gives up on her love and starts living at the orphanage.

Haranath is led to committing suicide due to the atrocities of Mathur Ghosh, an evil and corrupt man. However, Haranath's son, Shankar, grows up with the sole aim of avenging the wrongs done to his father.

Sudipa falls in love with Rawnobir, a goon, and soon, they both get married. However, things take a turn when Rawnobir is arrested and gets imprisoned.

Brijlal, a cunning entrepreneur, plots to kill his partner and his son (Tapas Paul). However, the son survives and years later, ends up falling in love with Brijlal's beautiful daughter (Mahua Roy Choudhury).

A well-to-do married couple keeps bickering over minor issues though the pair love each other. With time, their love gets tested but they keep yearning for each other.

Barun Banerjee, a middle-class bank employee, gets in trouble after the head office sets up an enquiry about previous transactions. However, he soon sees the selfish nature of the world around him.
