We Were Kings is a documentary about the legendary German grunge band Union Youth. 15 years ago they made it from the province to L.A., and then failed in the most brutal way. Now attempting a comeback as the band "Pictures" with some new members, they face their demons in order to make music once again. A gripping musical drama about drug addiction, responsibility and the power of friendship.

Ronald Miehling is a living neighborhood legend. At the end of the 1980s, Miehling was one of the most powerful druglords in Hamburg. Miehling's cocaine business was flourishing and he enjoyed a life of luxury. But the police are always on his trail. A game of cat and mouse begins. At one point, "The Snow King" flees to Colombia, but is eventually caught and convicted. Today Miehling is an open prisoner. He meets up with friends from back then and tries to prepare for life after prison. The film shows an unvarnished picture of the former "Snow King", meeting old companions, friends, detectives and his mother - the inside view of a world that we otherwise only know from the headlines.

A train arrives, the man on the crane looks tired, a little girl draws figures in the sand. A babble of voices in the call center, police officers running to the scene, a ray of light breaks through the darkness in the sewer, fireworks, people dancing in the night. The big city: a gigantic mechanism, always in flux. Every morning anew, people follow their rhythm, looking for space.

Director Alexandra Bidian goes to Romania, the home country of her late father. She invites her mother and sister along to the land where they used to spend their summer holidays, but this time in search of memories. It is her attempt to address and voice things, and her means to understand the man who wrote a lot and spoke very little, and about whom much remains in the dark. When her father came to Germany, he already had a life behind him – including decades of political involvement, which was documented not only by him, but also by the Securitate, socialist Romania’s secret police. Bidian combs through old boxes, reads letters, and peruses files. But instead of answers, she is left with more questions. A road trip to the past, and a letter to her father. Using archival material, family pictures, and interviews with friends and associates, Bidian tries to track down who her father was – and how her own story is intertwined with his life and his actions, as well as with his losses.
