A lyrical tale of the pure, vernal romance between a diffident, somewhat naive girl from a rural backwater and a fairly dissolute, but kind-hearted law student from Prague.

Postman Brabec is a welcome guest of the revue theatre for his sense of humor, and he brings his director Holt letters from female admirers every day. Holt's fans include Brabec's sister Anny. The girl would like to join the theatre, but for the time being works as a maid for the actress Velden. A new revue is being rehearsed, the name of the author is secret. Veldenová will return the role just before the premiere because she doesn't like it. The quick-witted Brabec introduces the director to his sister, who knows all the parts by heart.

The catastrophically dry weather of 1947 causes immense problems in the countryside. In the small village Klícov, only farmers Hánek and Bervida and the old Hromádka have water. The others must queue every day for a drop for themselves and their cattle. All the villagers lament over their previous decision to turn down the cooperative chairman Kouba's proposal to built a new village water-supply system.

The village girl Žofka goes to work in Prague, where she is seduced by the reckless Rudolf Slaba. Rudolf is fired from his job for drunkenness and Žofka leaves him after the birth of her child. On the advice of an old beggar, she starts begging for a living, but is imprisoned, although she is innocent. After her release, she wants to drown herself with the child, but faints and then believes that the child has drowned. Mrs. Robová takes in the poor Žofka. After her death, Žofka inherits the money. With a guilty conscience, she returns to the village of Dubová, where she marries Jan Rokyta. However, the marriage is childless. The son of a landowner, Jaroslav Beneš, meets the charming Jitřenka in Prague. She is expecting a child with Jaroslav, but his parents prevent the wedding. Jaroslav's confidante Žofka learns from Jitřenka's parents that Jitřenka was found in a boat on the river, and recognizes her as her daughter. (Filmový přehled)

The family of the worker Kučera lives happily. His daughter Anežka, engaged to technical draftsman Adolf, is a seamstress. His son Váš is studying to be a machinist. The family also includes his grandfather, a former miner. However, an economic crisis is beginning. Factories stop production. Adolf loses his job and has an argument with Anežka, who has no idea the cause of his nervousness.

The family also includes his grandfather, a former miner. However, an economic crisis is beginning. Factories stop production. Engineer Frank Nor loses his sight in an unfortunate accident. When his superficial fiancée Eliška leaves him, Frank attempts suicide. To prevent him from repeating his attempt, his father hires a young nurse, Milena. The girl takes exemplary care of Frank, literally becoming "the apple of his eye"...

Topol makes use of this turn of events by allowing him to escape and telling the gamekeeper to plant the bag full of stolen items in Karel's cottage. The game keeper is given a bonus in his pay as a reward so that he can marry his girlfriend Vlasta. Karel is arrested and sentenced. Anuška, whose father owes money to Topol, is forced into marriage with the landowner. In prison Karel has fed his hatred of all people and, on his release, he builds a log cabin in the woods and lives there alone with his faithful dog. His female company is short-lived. Helena, a girl from the town, lives with him for a while out of a longing for some kind of adventure but she soon goes off with a rich dandy.
