6.1They kiss and they fight, they love and they kill each other: Hagen Trinker and the others, bums and junkies, men and women. They live in Munich, under the bridge, in the shell of a building. Sometimes an armchair is their home, sometimes a newspaper is their mattress. But mostly they are on the move anyway, on the street, in shopping arcades, at the train station - without a destination and without illusions. Then Julia joins them, 15 years old, who has run away from home - a princess, as one of the clique says. Hagen falls in love with her. A fairy tale begins, and the next moment it is already over. But now Hagen is ready to fight once more: he simply has to find Judith again...

The filmmaker goes on an expedition using a book by Gerhard Roth as travel guide: it is a voyage through the texts. He tells of an inner and exterior voyage, an essayistic trip along the itineraries laid out by Roth. The eight stories told by Gerhard Roth are stories about Austria, encounters with people living on the border, about outsiders and outcasts.

8.0Before Ernst Winckelmann, a sales representative for hair products, calls on hairdressing salons and chemist's shops, he rehearses what he intends to say, shakes the dandruff from his hair and slips into an innocuous pair of shoes. None of this helps. Winkelmann is no sales talent and his product is a failure. Meanwhile, in a small corner pub in the Barmbek district of Hamburg, Winkelmann's young girlfriend Aline uses some firm but gentle persuasion to make the last customer leave. Not much doing tonight. During the day, Rüdiger the barman, pulls most of the beers for the landlord, Aline's father, who survives on memories of good times at Miami Beach...
