In communist Czechoslovakia in 1980, 15-year-old Mara dreams of leaving her village to study in the city and become a pilot. But her father, a widowed Ruthenian farmer, insists she stay and work the land. When her village faces destruction due to a new dam, their generational conflict intensifies, revealing the struggle between tradition, identity, and the desire for freedom in a context of historical change.

Vanda works as a stewardess in Frankfurt am Main. When Vanda loses her job, she takes the opportunity to finally visit her grandmother Magdalena, who has been living in her old homeland, the Slovak Republic, for several years. Vanda immediately feels at home in this completely different world and soon falls in love with the somewhat shady Mirko. When Vanda finds out that he works as a trafficker, she is initially horrified, but soon realizes that he is also helping people who are in great need.

The story begins at the end of the great storyteller's life, when through his own memories, captured by his hand and in book form, he returns to his childhood, the time he entered the Levoč grammar school, to 1840. The story of urban boys, brothers Jakub, 17, and Mato, 10, who spend their summer holidays at their grandmother's house in the countryside: the younger one voluntarily, even though his summer well-being is spoiled by maths tutoring, the older one involuntarily, because he had other plans for the holidays. As the summer days pass, however, both boys' plans and moods change. While Jakub is experiencing his first serious emotional relationship with the pretty Renko, the younger Mato and his local friend, the mentally challenged Misha Bomba, are undertaking tajo.
