When Herra, a young Czech woman, falls in love with Nazir, an Afghan, she has no idea what kind of life awaits her in post-Taliban Afghanistan, nor of the family she is about to integrate into. A liberal grandfather, an adopted child who is highly intelligent and Freshta, who would do anything to escape her husband's violent grip.

The Šumava Mountains hide buildings lost in the mountains, the Vydra River, a church, a rectory, marshes, a post office, a gold mine, and a hermit's hut. In this environment, the fates of the beautiful girl Anna, a tormented widow, her perpetually drunk husband—a postman—and dentist Holoubek, who left his native Vienna, intertwine. Over the course of the year, their paths cross, but then the summer of 1914 arrives and war intervenes decisively in the lives of all those involved... Jan Balej's animated film One Night in One City (2007) from the Czech Republic. Very little dialogue throughout, but instead a rich world of sounds and music which more than match the detailed animation and curious vignettes that create the film.

The film chronicles the events of a village on the Czech-Austrian border from the 1930s to 1950s, where genocide occurred due to fallout between German citizens and Czechs who collaborated with the Nazi regime during the war.

On grandpa's life story, mapping a big part of the 20th century traumas, one can see how much an individual's fate depends on the movement and changes of history. And how much one can defy it and maintain inner firmness and integrity. Or perhaps just dear life.
