Both the in-laws and the groom have an obsession: come what may, they are keen on honoring their engagements: promises are made to be kept is their motto. And when, on the wedding day, the unfortunate parents cannot provide the newly weds with...the "Mérinos" mattress which is part of the bride's Trousseau ,they are desperate. The husband will spend the whole wedding festivities trying to keep his word.

Director Jean Delannoy's immediate followup to his brilliant Les Jeux sont Faits was the more conventional Aux Yeux du Souvenir (aka Souvenir and To the Eyes of Memory). The film is based on a true story, wherein an France airliner managed to survive a journey from Rio De Janeiro to Dakar with two of its engines incapacitated. To this already intensely dramatic situation has been added a romantic subplot involving Claire Magny (Michele Morgan) and Jacques Forester (Jean Marais). The love story adds very little to the film; fortunately, neither does it detract from the film's overall quality. As was the case with many French productions of the 1940s, Aux Yeux du Souvenir benefits immeasurably from the Wagnerian musical score by Georges Auric.

René is hungry and has no money. He returns home, where only bills await him. Her neighbor Lulu is a film actress. She tries to get him hired as an extra on the set where she herself works. It is a film about gastronomy. He thinks he can finally get his fill of food, but bad luck, he plays the role of an old man who pushes her away. At the end of the day, he returns home and, passing in front of his landlady who receives, goes to mime them all that is supposed to have taken place during the filming by eating all the food offered to his appetite. After this meal, he will invite his neighbor Lulu to come to his place.

A prudish man becomes, by inheritance, owner of the Bal Tabarin which, according to the testamentary provisions, he must manage himself. He launches himself happily into this life of pleasures and hides it from his family.
