Raul and Saul work at the same office. Raul, outgoing and good-natured, comes from a broken marriage. Saul is shy, with a critical and bitter disposition, is recovering from a failed suicide attempt. In spite of their differences, they become quite good friends. But their colleagues begin to wonder whether there's something beyond friendship between them.

Hilário Pestana, the most famous, funniest and, ironically, saddest Brazilian actor, has died. He has passed through many stages of Brazilian cinema: the chanchadas, the Vera Cruz classics, the pornochanchadas, and even experimental movies. He was beloved by the public and had a gift for laughter, but he only desired to be a serious man.

A group of artisans sell handmade wallets, belts, bags and sandals at Rua da Ladeira, but the production is disorganized. A young businessman decides to invest in the boys, divides them into work groups and decreases their resting hours. In return, he offers them a great place to live. Their “industry” starts to make a profit, but those who work continue to earn very little.

At night, during a transfer, the inmates of a maximum-security prison escape and head towards a small town. The authorities ask the citizens to help capture the fugitives by any means necessary, offering a cash reward. Amidst the chaos, a young couple in crisis tries to stay alive.
