In this infinite space, we currently know of only one planet where life exists. We know of only one history of civilization. And we know of only one type of intelligence—that of humans on Earth. Since time immemorial, the question of whether there is anyone else out there in the boundless reaches of space has remained a mystery. The film features scientists involved in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, as well as renowned writers Arkady Strugatsky and Chingiz Aitmatov.

Near a gray and unnamed city is the Zone, a place guarded by barbed wire and soldiers, and where the normal laws of physics are victim to frequent anomalies. A stalker guides two men into the Zone, specifically to an area in which deep-seated desires are granted.

In the near future, writer Victor Banev gets himself on a UN commission to investigate the goings-on in the remote town of Tashlinsk, where reports tell of a virus-created race of brainiac mutants. His tween daughter Ira is enrolled at a school for gifted children which has been taken over by the mutants, who have grown to despise ordinary humanity.

The police get a call-out to a lonely hotel in the Alps. When an officer gets to the hotel everything seems to be alright. Suddenly, an avalanche cuts them off from the rest of the world and strange things start happening.

In a small Russian town, there is a Research Institute for magic. One of the witches, Alyona Sanina, is going to marry a guy named Ivan Puhov (not a magician). A jealous Apollon Sataneev tells her boss Kira Shemahandskaya that Sanina is going to marry not Ivan Puhov, but Ivan Kivrin, whom Shemahandskaya is going to marry herself. Enraged, Shemahandskaya, who is a powerful witch, orders Sanina to forget about her Ivan and marry Sataneev instead. And this will be final unless Alyona kisses Puhov before midnight on New Year. Alyona's friends call Puhov to the rescue.

Based on the novel of brothers Strugatski. April 27th 1986 An unidentified flying object crashed down in the southern region near Linnakallio village, resulting in the forming of an hazardous area, where the laws of nature have gone wrong.

The story of a writer who accidentally stumbles across the elixir of immortality and in doing so encounters the small group of immortals who have jealously guarded this secret for centuries. Once the writer has knowledge of this elixir, called 'Mafussalin', the group of five immortals give him a stark choice: either join them, with the price of admission, being a duel to the death between the immortal who accidentally gave the secret away or death at the hands of the group. As the writer makes up his mind, sometimes aided and at other times opposed by the ever shifting alliances from within the group, we discover how the other immortals became this way, their true ages and what they have done with this 'gift'.

Not far from the village is the old fortress of Kara-Tair, the abode of silence, secrets and.. lots of snakes. No one disturbs her peace except zmeyelov Mirzaev. But it is in the fortress that the thread of the crime stretches.
