Jarvala's daughter Aliina and the miller Jalmari Hurttia are in love with each other. Jarvala's father does not approve of the miller as a son-in-law, because he wants his daughter to marry into wealth. The wealthy widower Elias Horha proposes to Aliina, who eventually agrees to marry the old man.

Second Lieutenant Romppainen and Sergeant Ryhmä are tasked with blowing up the enemy's ammunition depot. They surrender themselves as prisoners in order to easily reach the Russian side. The resourceful friends and their cat Mörökölli cause all sorts of trouble, especially for the tough female commissar Vengrovska, who is more of a pretty opponent than a scary one.

Poke and Pena, two private investigators in debt, see an advertisement in the newspaper about Dr. Peltonen's disappearance and the promised reward for finding him. The boys retreat to investigate the case in a house they have rented in the countryside, which happens to be next door to the criminal gang that kidnapped the doctor. The film revolves around Vihtori's clandestine involvement with an attractive and rather worldly young woman named Ritva, who is planning to marry boxing champion and garage owner Klasu Tullari, son of Vihtori's friend Tomi, and their interactions with daughter Vappu and her fiancé, Peter von Schaslick, a mechanic in Klasu's garage, under the nose of the threatening and suspicious Klaara, with lazy son Nisse acting as a rather sardonic Greek chorus. Teuvo Tulio's only comedy.

Remembering the past, Rea returns to the moment that changed her life. Coming of age, Rea's alcoholic fate is wrapped around two men, composer Tauno Tarras and sea captain Erkki.

A small village provides a scene for intrigues, fights, love, jealousy, accusations, and revenge.
