Berlin in June of 1940. While Nazi propaganda celebrates the regime’s victory over France, a kitchen-cum-living room in Prenzlauer Berg is filled with grief. Anna and Otto Quangel’s son has been killed at the front. This working class couple had long believed in the ‘Führer’ and followed him willingly, but now they realise that his promises are nothing but lies and deceit. They begin writing postcards as a form of resistance and in a bid to raise awareness: Stop the war machine! Kill Hitler! Putting their lives at risk, they distribute these cards in the entrances of tenement buildings and in stairwells. But the SS and the Gestapo are soon onto them, and even their neighbours pose a threat.

In may 1940, the German troops enter France. Frightened by the progress of the enemy, the people of a small village of Pas-de-Calais decide on the recommendations of the prefecture, to give up everything to go on the road, fleeing to the coast.

Sometimes, someone steps into your world, and for a moment, everything goes quiet. To the point where you must decide - play it safe or risk it all. Standing at the edge of the unknown.

Carlos Benede is in his thirties, single and helps minors cope with the after-effects of crime. Alexander is a strong-willed and precocious eleven-year-old, who witnesses the horrific death of his mother by his own father. Benede mentors Alexander and the two develop a bond. But when the trial of Alexander’s father is over, it’s time for the two to part. Alexander has been placed in the care of his aunt, but when she is no longer able, a new caregiver must be found. An unconventional counselor from the youth welfare office learns of Alexander’s trust in Benede, who himself grew up in a home, and reunites the two. Although not always easy, the relationship grows and deepens into one of father and son.

Young forester Jana Doussière takes up a short-term position at the Grunewald forestry office. Coming from a wild forest in the Vosges, the solitude-loving Jana, who tends to struggle with people, encounters the big city forest and its "Berlin peculiarities". In addition to naked men, demonstrating wild boar fans and committed conservationists, the new forest warden is also confronted with sofas in trees, a mysterious city hunter and forest warden Robin, who hasn't exactly been waiting for her. And even her best friend Aylin, who brought her here, doesn't seem to have told her everything about the new job...

Fresh out of high school, Aaron and Matthew travel to Berlin for a summer that's supposed to be about freedom, and about the feelings they've never said out loud. But as the city opens up around them, Aaron starts seeing something no one else can: a menacing figure that follows him through the streets, feeding on the history written into his own Jewish heritage. As the two grow closer, the horror only Aaron can perceive grows with them, and Matthew is left to decide whether to believe the person he's falling for, or the evidence of his own eyes.

Because her father Erich had a heart attack, Meike returns to her hometown on Lake Constance with her son Paul. But Erich is not happy about the visit. He still blames his daughter for his son's death. Only his bright grandson Paul manages to break through the rough shell of the Lake Constance fisherman. And Meike meets her childhood sweetheart, Paul's father, again.
