July 18, 1902. A woman and her daughter are brutally murdered in the Extremaduran town of Don Benito. Everybody knows the depraved town boss was responsible, but nobody dares to declare against him.

This movie doesn't have any coherent plot. It's the portrait of the lives of different people in the hard years of post-war in Spain (the 40's), and how they manage to survive in a country desolated by the war. Like other films: La colmena or Roma (Fellini) it shows us lots of characters and some moments of their lives.

Cesar and Isabel just got married for the Jewish rite, their religion. He is a director of a banking company. She works in a bookstore owned by her mother-in-law. The couple sees their happiness truncated when César discovers financial anomalies in the entity where he works. What were initially charges against some managers, becomes an accusation of embezzlement against César, who is in France to prevent his entry into military service. Go back and appear before the judge to prove his innocence.

Some urchins simulate an accident and steal a wallet. To their surprise, it turns out to be that of the famous footballer Alfredo Di Stefano, popularly known as "La Saeta Rubia". A Spanish folk group goes to Paris hired by a French businessman, but he runs away, leaving them without resources. Pastora, beautiful Seville, reminds that she has a friend in Paris who is painter. Her companions and her ask him for help to return to Spain. The painter wants to help them but first he have to sell a paint to a wealthy Englishman to get resources. The Englishman goes to his place and fall in love with Pastora, and instead of buying the paint suggests to pay the return trip for all of them if Pastora stays with him in Paris.
