Vienna in the eighties. An accidental meeting in a restaurant. She, Hannah, is Jewish and has a live-in lover, a young and successful architect. Alfred's friend Ernst Kissling recommends that he show his uncle the Schöller Guesthouse, whose guests are quite eccentric. Landowner Klapproth, who truly believes the guests to be lunatics, is thoroughly amused.

The Sackbauer family unexpectedly inherits a villa with a large garden in a cottage district in Lower Austria. The villa itself is in acceptable condition, but the garden is less so. Mundl quickly sets about sprucing it up with garden gnomes, lanterns, and lots of love.

A faithful family has gathered around "Mundl": his wife Toni, who says little but always has the last word; his son Karli, who marries Irmi, a woman from "higher circles", and his parents-in-law, the Werners, who have some difficulty in getting accustomed to the coarse tones of the Sackbauer family. Then Mundl's daughter Hanni brings home a bespectacled intellectual, of all people, and altogether, everyday life in Vienna can be rather exciting.

Conductor Johannes Wildner leads the Philharmonic Orchestra Bratislava in a command performance of Johann Strauss's final operetta, "Wiener Blut" (Viennese Blood), at Austria's internationally recognized Mörbisch operetta festival in 1994. The production -- featuring a libretto by Victor Leon and Leo Stein -- showcases the choir of the Concert Union of the Wiener Volksoper and the Ballet of the Slovak National Theatre.
