It's a film about solidarity and human help: in this case, from a less persecuted Pole to a more persecuted Jew. The film's protagonists are a young woman, Jadwiga, who makes a living feeding lice at the Institute, and a ghetto escapee, Dalek, and later his supposed sister, or rather his wife, Fryda, whom Jadwiga shelters in her apartment. The three characters fight for their lives, for survival, and not only for their own but also Fryda's unborn child. However, they fail, as a series of tragic events unfolds. Knowing that her husband, Dalek, will not reveal the truth about them to Jadwiga, who is in love with him, Fryda does so alone and, without saying goodbye, departs for the embattled ghetto. Her husband follows her.

In the winter of 1943 two young Jews, Alek and Fryda, escape, via sewer tunnels, from the atrocities underway in Warsaw ghetto. Alek, entrusted with undeveloped photos of the horrors within, makes his way to a supposedly safe apartment only to find it occupied by Germans. Another tenant, a pole Stephania, abruptly offers to shelter him in her spacious apartment. She comforts him and they make love that very night. Stefania is uncommonly generous and willing to jeopardize her own safety by hiding a Jew. She even goes to a nearby church and rescues Fryda. But Fryda is ungrateful and proceeds to sabotage the trio's safety in insidious ways.

1926. The Szkocka café in Lviv. Among the café guests is a group of mathematicians – Banach, Mazur, Ulam, Stożek, Szuder. A heated discussion is underway. These young mathematicians are employees of the Jan Kazimierz University. The world will soon hear about them. The most brilliant of them was Stefan Banach (1892-1945). Who was this brilliant self-taught man? How did he end up in Lviv? Although he was one of the most outstanding scholars of the 20th century, not many photographs depicting his interesting life have survived. To this day, he remains a little-known figure in Poland. Due to the poor photographic documentation, as well as the complete lack of film archives concerning Banach himself, it became reasonable in this case to use fictionalized scenes that recall important events in the scholar's life and bring his character closer to the audience.
