A young man who lives and works in the big town, comes to his native village to visit his family. He meets his old love, who had finished school but can’t find job. He spends his time with old friends in the bars. At the same time, one of his friends comes from Germany full of money.

Maestro Nikolai Masoudov, a talented writer, and his assistant Margaret, are working on a biblical story of Pontius Pilate. The Satan — Woland, and his lieutenants, are harassing Master by surveillance, by killing his friend, and sending another friend to Gulag prison in Siberia. Victimized by their harassment, Master becomes paranoid, and is locked up in a mental institution. Margaret is trying to save him regardless of the danger.

A young prison inmate gets released together with an old gangster. They go to town together in order to visit their families and friends, but nobody knows that the old man is mortally ill.
